Veneers in San Diego, CA

Veneers are typically made from porcelain or composite resin material and placed directly over a patient’s natural teeth to cover imperfections like chips, cracks, stains, gaps between teeth, small misalignments, and more.

Some patients choose to get veneers to address their smile imperfections because they help to create a more uniform appearance for their teeth. At Michael McMahon, DDS, veneers are custom-designed for each patient to fit perfectly and comfortably with the patient’s other teeth. Veneers are an excellent option for patients who don’t want to undergo orthodontic treatment to fix slight misalignments or unevenness in their smiles.

Types of Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that go over the front of your tooth. They are made from impressions of your teeth, so they fit correctly over each tooth. Resin composite is another type of veneer that is thinner and more translucent than porcelain. Composite veneers are usually used on teeth that have small chips or cracks.

Composite veneers are typically less pricey than porcelain veneers because of the lower cost of the material. However, the durability of the composite may be shorter, with damage over time due to staining and chipping.

How Do Veneers Work?

A veneer is a thin, tooth-shaped piece of custom-made porcelain to fit over a tooth's front. Designed to look and function like natural teeth, veneers can mask various imperfections, including discolorations, spacing issues, and stainings. The veneer is bonded onto the tooth's surface using a unique adhesive to create a flawless appearance. With proper care, veneers can last for decades before needing to be replaced.

Advantages of veneers

Many people receive veneers because they love their real teeth but want to change their natural teeth' length, shape, color, or surface. By using veneers, patients can completely transform the look of their teeth while ensuring that they maintain their natural bite. Additionally, they are resistant to staining and can match the shade of any patient’s surrounding teeth for an even and natural-looking appearance. To receive veneers, you should have healthy teeth and gums. A filling must be placed before placing your veneers if tooth decay is present. Once the teeth are healthy and free of decay, impressions will be taken of your teeth and sent to a laboratory where your custom veneers will be created. While you wait for your new restorations, you’ll be fitted with a temporary restoration to protect your teeth and allow you to eat and speak normally as you await your permanent ones. Once your custom veneers are placed, you’ll return to our office to have any excess cement removed and the fit of the veneers checked. Then, you’ll have a beautiful new smile that you’ll love to show off!
